Most people do not decide whether to hire a car accident lawyer. They wait, and the decision gets made for them.

That is not a criticism. It is what happens when someone is hurt, the bills start arriving, an adjuster is calling and being pleasant about it, and the one piece of information nobody has offered is what a lawyer would actually cost. So the question sits there. It sits there while treatment continues, while the file ages, and while the insurance company builds its position.

I want to take the ambiguity out of it.

This book covers three things, and the title says them in order. Fees, meaning what representation costs, how a contingency percentage works, what is separate from that percentage, and what comes out of a recovery before anything reaches the client. Deadlines, meaning the two-year statute, the much shorter clock on claims against a government entity, and the moment a claim can no longer be reopened. And what happens next, meaning the actual sequence of a case, from the first weeks of investigation through valuation, through the demand, through settlement or litigation, to the venue it lands in.

I am not going to tell you that everyone needs a lawyer. I do not believe that, and I have said so on the record. There are situations where the property damage is handled, there are no injuries, and the number on the table is enough. In those situations, you probably do not need me, and a lawyer who tells you otherwise is not doing you a service.

What I will tell you is that the decision is about risk. Meaning, how much pressure does the other side feel, and what happens to you if that pressure never materializes? That framing runs through every chapter in this book, because it is the framing that actually predicts outcomes.

Everything in these pages came from recorded conversations, which means the answers are the same ones I give on the phone. Where something depends on the facts, I say it depends. Where I have repeatedly seen something go wrong, I say that too.

Start wherever your situation puts you. If you are still deciding whether to call anyone, start at the beginning.
